The French and American cultures tend to vary greatly in terms of cuisine, pop culture and lifestyle. However, if there is one thing both cultures can bond over it is a glass of quality wine. When my cousin Joanne recently visited from France, I knew that a trip to City Winery in NYC would be the perfect outing for winetasting and winemaking.
When I heard that City Winery’s cellar holds “300 French Oak Barrels,” I was immediately sold! They have a 5:30 P.M tour every weekday, and on the weekends these tours are held at 3:00, 4:00 and 5:00. City Winery is downtown on Varick Street (seems like everything good in the city is downtown), so there is a bunch of things you can work in before and afterwards such as shopping in the ultra-chic boutiques of SoHo. You have to applaud this New York City winery for the stellar staff they have in place. Everyone in City Winery seemed accommodating, and a couple of the workers were able to communicate with my cousin in French.
Another really cool feature, that we happened to stumble into, is that City Winery hosts many album releases and musical events of that nature where you can enjoy some nice wine and live entertainment. We showed up thinking we would taste a bunch of different wines and maybe take part in their “wine making,” activity, but as we got here there was a bit of a line waiting to see an international artist perform. I tried searching the website for the name of this talented guitarist afterwards but I was unable to track her down. Either way, I was really surprised by the large event space that could seat around 200. It was really intimate and cozy, and everyone remained seated and enjoyed the acoustics. Joanne made me try dozens of different cheeses that complimented the different wines perfectly.
While we didn’t take part in the wine making at City Winery, a gentleman sitting next to us by the name of Terry assured us that the classes are worthwhile. Whether you have family in town or are looking for a great date idea, City Winery’s plethora activities are great for entertaining guests. Joanne and I sure had a blast!
City Winery is located at 155 Varick Street on the corner of Vandam St. in SoHo. City Winery in NYC offers winemaking classes, wine by the barrel, tastings and regularly scheduled musical performances. Check out the City Winery website for more information on events and classes.
